Why Choose 3M Fire Barrier Mortar?

  • The firestop for large openings: When an opening is too big for sealant, mortar fills it. Listed systems include concrete floors up to 63.5 mm (2½ in) thick.
  • Endothermic heat sink: The gypsum-based mortar absorbs heat as it is exposed to fire, helping the seal hold. Tested up to 3 hours in listed systems.
  • Mix it for the job: Mix 2:1 with water to pour and self-level, or 3:1 to trowel, so one product covers horizontal and vertical openings.
  • Bonds to the materials in the opening: Excellent adhesion to concrete, metals, wood, plastic and cable jacketing.
  • Repairable and halogen-free: Re-enterable with a hole saw when services change, halogen-free, and paintable with a primer.

Applications

  • Large Mechanical and Electrical Penetrations: Sealing openings where multiple pipes, cables and cable trays pass through fire-rated walls and floors.
  • Blank Openings in Walls and Floors: Filling blank openings in fire-rated assemblies up to 3-hour ratings.
  • Floor Penetrations: Pouring self-levelling mortar into concrete floor openings up to 63.5 mm (2½ in) thick.
  • Cable Tray and Busway Openings: Sealing larger service openings where the sealant would be impractical.

How to Use

Step 1: Check the Listed System — Select the UL or Intertek listed system for your wall or floor and penetrants. It sets the thickness and any damming material.

Step 2: Prepare and Dam — Clean the surfaces so they are free of frost and install the damming material the system calls for.

Step 3: Mix — Mix with potable water for at least 5 minutes: 2 parts mortar to 1 part water for pouring, or 3 parts to 1 for trowelling.

Step 4: Place and Tool — Pour or trowel the mortar into the opening and tool within 20 minutes. Clean tools with water before it cures.

Step 5: Allow to Cure — It accepts mechanical anchors 12 hours after application. Keep rain and water spray off for 18 hours and don't apply below 4°C.
